The UK government’s agenda of austerity and welfare reform continues to have a staggering impact on women’s lives and on gender equality. However, this has been mostly ignored by the mainstream political response and media commentary to recent huge cuts to public spending. Instead, the dominant narrative focuses on child poverty and ‘hardworking families’. Hard work in paid employment, that is (work in the home and community is easy), and within deserving, nuclear families. Women’s economic independence, safety and self-worth are endangered by this mindset, and the value of women’s care work, as lone mothers and as unpaid carers, is yet further undermined....
